The need for speed

Posted by G-force

Had 2 great speed themed weekends in a row. First up was the air show at Farnborough, which was every bit as awesome as I’d thought it would be, and of course the British Motor show packed to the
roof with expensive new toys and exiting new concept cars.

The air show had it all: all the F’s, from F-14 to F-16’s, Grippen's, Euro
Fighters, B-52 bombers, Harrier jump jets, Unmanned Stealth Vehicles, Apache Longbows, Ospreys, the new Airbus A380 (saw the Airbus test pilots fly all 80+ tonns of this bad boy like it was a foamalite glider), Mig’s etc etc etc. Everything and anything that has wings or rotors!

It was quite over cast and wet on the day, lots of thunder storms etc, which in its own way added to the ambience of the event. Also, because the runway was wet, everytime any of the fighter jets took off, they left a huge trail of steam in their wake. Here are a few pics from the events, although, in the case of the air show, I feel that pictures can hardly do it justice! Nothing can quite convey the sheer exhilaration of “feeling” a F16 afterburning off the deck, a mere 25 Meters away!

The real star of the show, to just reiterate, had to be the sound. The sheer POWER of these jets… just unbelievable.

On to the Motor Show… As with the Air show, it’s quite tough to try and convey the sheer size and feel of the event! I’d like to think that it’s damn near impossible to see it all in one day. Some of the highlights for me would most definitely be the concept cars, the super car paddock and the “pimp my ride” exhibitions. Also, the Top Gear stand was a big laugh! They had most of last years F1 cars there as well and at the Ferrari stand you could even try your hand at changing one of the tires on these bad boys, with the best time winning some sort of prize or whatever. We couldn’t take part in any of the test drives though, since we didn’t have UK driving licenses, but that ain't no biggie. Checked out a show as well, Romeo and Juliet, with cars! Well, it was quite a zoomed-up, ge-drop en ge-Hokkenheim’ed version, but very very entertaining.
